Frame Installation

The proper installation of a painting into its frame is an important step in the conservation process. Unfortunately, many of the pieces that come into our lab have been installed using less than perfect techniques and materials. Some of these methods can actually cause damage to the painting!

We first make sure that the frame is large enough to accommodate the size of the painting. A painting should never be forced into the frame opening. A tight frame can cause distortions to appear in the canvas as the stretcher expands and contracts under different environmental conditions. If the frame opening is too small, we will carve out the inner edge to make sure the painting fits well. The painting should also not be able to move around excessively in the opening. The addition of spacers along the edges can create a opening that holds the painting in proper position.

Next, the edge of the frame rabbet is covered in a soft felt that protects the face of the painting from being in direct contact with the wooden frame. The painting is then placed into the frame and held in place by brass mending plates that are shaped to the profile of the piece. These plates are attached to the frame and will cause no structural damage to the painting support.

If the painting is supported by a stretcher with wooden keys, we attach the keys to prevent them from falling out of position. A loose key can fall between the canvas and stretcher, potentially causing deformations or tears.

A protective backing of acid free mat board is then attached to the reverse of the painting. This protects the painting from blows and also helps keep debris from accumulating between the canvas and stretcher.

Finally, a proper wire is attached using d-rings and appropriate hardware for the size and weight of the piece.

A beautiful frame can elevate the importance and enhance the appearance of a painting. Installing a painting properly into the frame will ensure the painting is protected for years to come.
